Dangote Cement Unveils Massive $160M, 3 Million Tonne Plant in Côte d’Ivoire, Bolstering West African Industrial Footprint

Dangote Cement, a subsidiary of the pan-African conglomerate Dangote Group, has officially commenced operations at its new, state-of-the-art production plant in Attingué, Côte d’Ivoire. The launch of the facility, which represents a strategic investment of approximately $160 million (100 billion CFA francs), marks a significant expansion of the company’s footprint on the continent and its commitment to fostering African self-sufficiency in essential building materials.

The new plant, situated roughly 30 kilometers from the commercial hub of Abidjan, covers an area of 50 hectares and boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 3 million metric tonnes (mt) of cement. This capacity makes it one of the group’s largest production units outside its home base of Nigeria.

Côte d’Ivoire is now the 11th African country to host a Dangote Cement production facility, a move that increases the group’s total installed continental capacity to an estimated 55 million tonnes per year. The company’s strategy is to leverage this local production capacity to support the burgeoning Ivorian infrastructure development, which is being driven by rapid urbanisation and major construction projects.

According to the Managing Director of Dangote Cement Côte d’Ivoire, Serge Gbotta, the ambition is clear: “to offer Ivorians internationally-standard cement, produced locally, at a competitive price.” He emphasized that the Attingué plant is “more than an industrial unit; it is a symbol of confidence in the future of Côte d’Ivoire and a commitment to sustainable development.”

The project is expected to deliver a significant socio-economic boost, with forecasts indicating the creation of more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. This will support local employment and stimulate the ecosystem of local Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), including transporters, retailers, and various building professionals. The company also announced plans to run training programs for young Ivorian engineers and technicians through the Dangote Academy to enhance local industrial management skills. The plant will produce premium cement in multiple grades, positioning Dangote Cement as a key partner in the country’s construction sector and contributing to the goal of establishing Côte d’Ivoire as a regional hub for cement production and export.
