PDP Leaders Led by Turaki and Wabara Hold Closed-Door Meeting with Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Vow to Reclaim Power

In a politically charged move signaling a renewed offensive against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a high-powered delegation of leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a closed-door meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta.

The delegation, which included a key factional National Chairman, Alhaji Taminu Turaki (SAN), arrived at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex, where they were received by the former President. Accompanying Turaki were several PDP elders, including former Senate President and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara; former governors Alhaji Muazu Babangida Aliyu (Niger State) and Senator Jonah Jang (Plateau State); and the party’s National Secretary, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja.

Speaking to journalists after the 45-minute private session, Turaki confirmed that the primary purpose of the visit was to formally introduce the recently elected new leadership of the party to the former President and to “drink from his wealth of wisdom and seek his blessings and support” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Turaki emphasized the party’s readiness to confront the ruling government, which he described as incompetent. “We have come to see our father here in Abeokuta, and we have spoken to Baba, and Baba too has spoken to us, and we are enriched,” he stated. He added that the party is “battle-ready” to take back power in 2027 and will demonstrate its resurgence by winning the upcoming off-season governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

The visit is viewed by political analysts as a critical step in the PDP’s attempt to unify its fractured ranks. The opposition party has been reeling from internal crises, leadership disputes, and a significant wave of defections, including high-profile exits in recent weeks. Obasanjo, while no longer a card-carrying member of the PDP, remains an influential elder statesman whose counsel is highly sought after by political actors across all divides.
