EFCC Busts Brutal ‘Yahoo Academy’ in Abuja; 31 Arrested as Ringleaders Lure Benue Youths with Fake Jobs and Beat Them into Learning Fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has “flipped the script” on organized cybercrime in the capital, uncovering a disturbing “training hub” where young Nigerians were reportedly being coerced into a life of fraud. The commission confirmed the arrest of 31 individuals during a sting operation at Becki Estate in Karu. This wasn’t just a group of “Yahoo Boys” it was a structured “Solution” to grooming new scammers, complete with kingpins, trainees, and a regime of physical abuse.
The “Tsunami” of details emerging from the raid reveals a predatory recruitment scheme. According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, many of the recruits were brought in from Benue State under “Renewed Hope” promises of high-paying, legitimate employment. However, upon arriving at the Karu facility, they were stripped of their phones, locked inside the building, and handed laptops with “Drill or Drop” instructions to learn the dark arts of internet fraud.
Perhaps most shocking was the level of internal control. Investigators found that the “academy” operated like a prison; trainees who failed to meet “scamming targets” or attempted to resist their new “careers” were reportedly subjected to corporal punishment. By “tinkering” with the psychological and physical safety of these youths, the operators turned the facility into a digital sweatshop. “This is a dangerous trend where organized crime is adopting a campus-like structure to scale their operations,” an EFCC source stated.
As the 31 suspects prepare to face the “digital trenches” of the Nigerian court system, the EFCC has issued a stern warning to parents to be wary of “unverified job offers” that require relocation to the FCT. While the kingpins face long years behind bars for human trafficking and cybercrime, the commission is working to identify the broader network of these “academies” springing up across the country. For the 29 trainees rescued from the Karu estate, the end of their “education” marks the beginning of a very different legal reality.
