Lagos State Inspects Yaba Isolation Hospital, Upgrades Emergency Facilities Over Regional Ebola Surge

The Lagos State Government has moved to strengthen its public health emergency response system, conducting a strategic assessment of facilities at the Infectious Disease Hospital (Mainland Hospital) in Yaba to ensure rapid containment readiness against potential outbreaks of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The inspection was led by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, alongside the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Olusola Adejumo, and technical leads across public health directorates. The assessment focused on verifying that the state’s frontline isolation and clinical care architecture can respond to high-consequence infectious diseases.

During the facility tour, health officials audited several operational zones, including the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), triage and isolation wards, diagnostic laboratories, central oxygen supply networks, and ongoing external renovation works.

Prof. Abayomi stated that the audit identified immediate maintenance needs across critical departments, such as the state biobank, hospital pharmacy, drainage systems, catering facilities, and the EOC command room. He emphasized that prompt remediation of these areas is essential to maintain biosafety protocols, prevent cross-contamination, and ensure patient care during an emergency.

The heightened state of vigilance follows ongoing international monitoring of the severe Ebola resurgence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where thousands of infections and fatalities linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain have prompted regional surveillance advisories.

Reassuring the public, the Health Commissioner affirmed that the state government is committed to upgrading its biosecurity architecture, expanding laboratory diagnostic capacity, and sustaining year-round surveillance to protect residents from emerging biological threats.
