Shettima Arrives in New York to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation at UNGA 81, Pushes for Global Reforms

Vice President Kashim Shettima has touched down in New York, United States, to lead Nigeria’s high-level delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), declaring that the country’s diplomatic engagements will be strictly guided by its national interest.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the prestigious global gathering, Shettima stated that while Nigeria remains a staunch supporter of multilateralism, the current structures governing international politics and economics are due for a radical overhaul. He noted that existing institutions must evolve to become more representative, equitable, and reflective of modern demographic and geopolitical realities.

“Our message in New York is clear: Nigeria believes in multilateralism, but the institutions that govern our world must become more representative, equitable and responsive to the realities of today,” Shettima stated shortly after his arrival. “We will engage our partners firmly from the standpoint of Nigeria’s national interest, while advancing President Tinubu’s call for a global system that gives developing countries a stronger voice and a fairer opportunity to prosper.”

The Vice President is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the high-level General Debate, outlining the administration’s positions on critical domestic and international issues, including regional peace and security, economic growth, and global cooperation.

Accompanying the Vice President on the delegation are senior government officials, ministers, and state governors. Beyond the main podium addresses, Shettima is slated to participate in several high-level thematic meetings and hold strategic bilateral discussions with world leaders, international organization heads, and development partners on the sidelines of the summit. These discussions are expected to focus heavily on restructuring the international financial architecture, securing equitable climate finance, expanding technology access, and securing stronger institutional representation for Africa.
