Islamic Clerics Urge President Tinubu to Change Policies Before 2027 Election

More than 1,000 Islamic clerics have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rethink his government’s economic policies or to reconsider running for re-election in the 2027 presidential race. This request was made in a statement after a national conference held in Kano State on Sunday.

The conference, organized by a group called Ko Da Naka for the Struggle to Promote Good Governance and Community Development, along with the AFAQ Educational Foundation, focused on the current state of the nation under President Tinubu.

The clerics expressed worries about ongoing economic difficulties, such as the removal of fuel subsidies, changes to the naira’s exchange rate, rising electricity costs, and new taxes. They believe these policies are making life harder for ordinary Nigerians.

In their statement, they criticized the government’s focus on increasing revenue while ignoring the rising cost of living and unemployment, which they say are threatening the well-being of citizens. They stated that if the government does not change its policies, it would be inappropriate to re-elect them in 2027. They suggested that the President should consider not running for office again.

The clerics also highlighted serious security issues, including killings and kidnappings in various parts of the country, especially in the North-West. They urged the government to take immediate action to improve safety.

Additionally, they raised concerns about the emigration of skilled professionals like doctors and teachers. They linked this trend to unemployment and poor working conditions. They called on the government to enhance salaries and working conditions to retain skilled Nigerians.

The clerics encouraged their fellow religious leaders to speak out against injustice and to help Nigerians choose candidates in 2027 based on their experience and ability to improve the country.
