Trump Calls for New Leadership in Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict
Former US President Donald Trump has stated that Ukraine should elect a new president, criticizing current leader Volodymyr Zelensky for not taking opportunities to end the war with Russia. Trump made these comments during a press conference at the White House on Saturday.
Trump accused Zelensky of failing to negotiate a resolution to the conflict, which began when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. He claimed that if he had been president at the time, the war would not have started. Trump said, “Zelensky could have settled this war many times, and he chose not to.”
His remarks followed a recent agreement between the United States and Russia to temporarily suspend sanctions on Russian diesel exports. Zelensky had expressed concern that this arrangement would allow Russia to generate revenue to continue funding its military actions in Ukraine.
Trump also criticized Zelensky’s military strategy, suggesting that attacks on Russian oil refineries could disrupt global energy supplies and raise fuel prices for American farmers. He warned that targeting these refineries could create problems for the international market.
He urged Zelensky to refrain from attacking Russian oil facilities, stating, “We said you can do whatever you want to Russia; don’t hurt the refineries because that’s the world’s problem.” Trump concluded by suggesting that Ukraine needs new leadership, saying, “I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.”
The war in Ukraine has caused significant civilian casualties and destruction since Russia’s invasion. Despite various diplomatic efforts, a lasting peace agreement has yet to be reached.
