Wike Critiques Obi’s Visits to IDP Camps Ahead of 2027 Elections
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has raised doubts about Peter Obi’s intentions during his visits to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. Wike’s comments came during an event in Abuja on Thursday, where he suggested that such visits might be more about gaining public support for the upcoming 2027 elections than genuine compassion.
Wike specifically pointed to Obi’s recent visits to IDP camps, including one on his 62nd birthday in Plateau State this year. He questioned how a politician who did not celebrate his birthday while in office could now choose to do so in IDP camps, calling this behavior into question. “Politicians can tell lies,” Wike stated, urging the public to think critically about such displays of humility.
Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has stated that he visited 12 IDP camps across Nigeria in recent weeks. During one visit, he shared images of himself with children at the Ramin Kura IDP camp in Sokoto State and emphasized the need for the government to improve conditions in these camps.
Wike cautioned Nigerians to be wary of politicians who engage in public acts of modesty, such as suddenly buying street food or visiting gas stations to comment on fuel prices, suggesting these actions are merely attempts to win votes. He encouraged voters to evaluate the current government’s performance against the conditions before it took office.
While acknowledging the country’s economic and security challenges, Wike urged citizens to consider whether there have been efforts to improve the situation. He advised voters to be cautious of politicians he labeled as “gamblers” as the 2027 elections approach.
