Nigerian Customs Enhances Security Partnerships to Fight Smuggling in Cross River

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is stepping up efforts to fight smuggling and improve security along borders and waterways in Cross River State. This initiative involves closer collaboration with various security agencies and private businesses.

Dr. Nkiru Nwala, the Acting Customs Area Controller, recently led a team to meet with the Nigerian Army, the Navy, and other security organizations. The goal is to share information and coordinate actions to tackle smuggling and enhance national security.

During these meetings, Nwala highlighted the importance of teamwork among security agencies to protect government revenue and ensure the country’s economic interests are safe. She pointed out that the unique geography of the area, which includes land borders and coastal routes, makes collaboration essential in addressing smuggling and other criminal activities.

At the meeting with the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena welcomed the Customs delegation. They discussed how working together can help secure border areas and combat smuggling effectively. Similar discussions took place with the Navy, where Nwala emphasized the need for cooperation to prevent the misuse of waterways for illegal activities.

The Customs team also met with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to discuss how they can work together to ensure safety and security on roads and in transportation. Nwala stressed that better communication and coordinated efforts would enhance their operations.

Additionally, the Customs Service engaged with Shoreline Logistics Nigeria Limited to strengthen relationships with private sector operators. Nwala urged logistics companies to maintain transparency and follow Customs regulations to support smooth trade operations.
