Nigeria Signs Global Measurement Agreement to Boost Trade and Standards
Nigeria has officially joined a global agreement aimed at improving measurement standards. This was marked by the signing of the Mutual Recognition Arrangement of the International Committee for Weights and Measures in France.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, the Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, during the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures. This event also celebrated his third anniversary in office.
According to a statement from the organisation, Nigeria’s status as an Associate State of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures became effective on June 4, 2026. This arrangement helps national measurement institutes demonstrate that their standards are recognized globally.
Dr. Okeke highlighted that this agreement will enhance Nigeria’s recognition in measurement capabilities, allow for international acceptance of its calibration certificates, and facilitate easier trade with other countries. He noted that it would also reduce reliance on foreign measurement services and strengthen the organisation’s technical authority.
Nigeria now joins a select group of African countries, including Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, and Tunisia, that have full membership in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. This development means that local manufacturers and small businesses can test their products in Nigeria and gain trust in international markets without the need for expensive foreign laboratories.
