House of Representatives Urges Government to Combat Fake Food Products

The House of Representatives is urging the Federal Government to take stronger action against the production and sale of fake and substandard food and beverages in Nigeria. This call came during a meeting on Tuesday, where lawmakers discussed the serious health risks posed by these products.

Abubakar Yalleman, a representative from Jigawa State, sponsored the motion. He emphasized that safe and quality food is essential for the health and productivity of Nigerians. Yalleman noted that proper food processing methods and hygiene are necessary to prevent illnesses caused by harmful substances.

He expressed concern over recent cases of counterfeit alcoholic drinks and illegal food factories. For example, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently shut down illegal alcohol operations in Lagos. Yalleman pointed out that many fake products are being sold, which could lead to serious health issues for consumers.

The lawmaker highlighted that some manufacturers are engaging in dangerous practices, like altering product labels and using contaminated ingredients. These actions can expose people to life-threatening conditions, including poisoning and damage to vital organs.

Yalleman acknowledged that agencies like NAFDAC and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) are responsible for regulating food safety. However, he stressed that more needs to be done to ensure these agencies effectively monitor the market and protect consumers.

Following the discussion, the House called on the Federal Government to prioritize the fight against fake food products. They urged NAFDAC, SON, and FCCPC, along with other agencies, to increase inspections and enforcement against those selling unsafe food and drinks.
