New Power Substations Opened in Kano to Boost Electricity Supply
The Federal Ministry of Power, along with the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Kano State Government, has opened four new transmission substations in Kano. This project adds 544 megawatts of electricity capacity to the state and the national grid.
The substations are located in the communities of Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi. The Walalambe substation includes two transformers that provide 80 megawatts. Kumbotso has a larger capacity with 300 megavolt-amperes (MVA) at a 330-kilovolt (kV) level, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi each receive 100 MVA transformers at a 132 kV level.
Adeola Labzy, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, stated that these projects are designed to improve electricity supply for industrial, commercial, and residential areas in Kano. They aim to relieve pressure on overloaded substations and address previously unmet demand for electricity.
At the Walalambe substation, six outgoing feeders will supply power to various areas, including the Tokarawa Industrial Area and major roads. Notably, the Lee Group, a significant industrial company, has been reconnected to the grid after being off-grid for over 30 years. The Dan-Agundi substation, which was damaged by fire, has also regained capacity to serve important locations like the Emir’s Palace.
These new investments are expected to strengthen the infrastructure needed for manufacturing and small businesses, leading to more jobs and better living conditions for residents. Labzy emphasized that these projects reflect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to improving the power sector and creating economic opportunities across Nigeria.
