Edo Governor’s Anti-Kidnapping Measures Lead to Death Sentences for Four Criminals

In Edo State, four kidnappers have been sentenced to death for their involvement in a kidnapping case that took place on June 14, 2026. The case gained attention after a CCTV video of the incident went viral on social media.

The kidnappers, who were operating in a red Lexus Jeep, attempted to abduct a man at the Vegetable Market off Airport Road. While the man escaped, his wife was taken. Following the incident, Edo’s Governor Monday Okpebholo took steps to strengthen laws against kidnapping and cultism, emphasizing the need for swift justice.

Shortly after the kidnapping, police arrested the four suspects: Marvelous Isaac, Wisdom Michael, Rufus Emete Michael, and Gift Rachael. They were charged with multiple kidnappings and membership in a secret cult. The trial concluded with Justice A. T. Momodu delivering the verdict on September 29, 2026, stating that the evidence provided by the CCTV footage was crucial in securing the convictions.

During the trial, it was revealed that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of 130 million Naira but received about 60 million Naira before their arrest. The judge praised the role of the CCTV in capturing the crime and encouraged residents to install cameras for their safety.

The case also highlighted the broader issue of kidnapping in the region, with several victims coming forward to identify the suspects after their arrest. The judge’s ruling reflects the government’s commitment to combatting violent crime in Edo State.
