Protests in France Turn Violent as Thousands Demand Action on Living Costs
Protests erupted across France on October 31, 2026, as thousands of people took to the streets to voice their concerns about rising living costs and inequality. The demonstrations, which included some participants dressed in Halloween costumes, turned violent in Paris and other cities, leading to clashes between police and protesters.
A police officer in Paris was injured after being hit by a Molotov cocktail, a type of firebomb. The Paris police reported that several hundred rioters attacked security forces with various projectiles. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez condemned the violence, attributing it to far-left extremist groups and calling the Molotov cocktail incident an attempted murder.
During the protests, some masked individuals used hammers to break up paving stones and threw them at police. In response, police deployed tear gas and made several arrests. More than 420 people were detained nationwide as authorities worked to control the situation.
In addition to the violence, a night-time curfew was announced for certain neighborhoods in Paris to maintain order. The protests were part of a larger movement organized by the Yellow Vest group, labor unions, and student organizations, focusing on the rising cost of living and inequality.
Despite the clashes, many protesters expressed their desire to demonstrate peacefully. Some carried signs with messages about the bleak future they face, while others criticized the restrictions on where protests could be held, viewing them as an attack on freedom.
As the political climate heats up ahead of upcoming presidential elections, the protests are expected to continue. Student groups announced plans for further demonstrations and blockades at high schools and universities in the coming days, aiming to keep the pressure on the government.
