Oyo State Government Defends Governor Makinde Against Anti-Islam Claims

The Oyo State Government has rejected claims by the Muslim Rights Concern that Governor Seyi Makinde is anti-Islam. In a statement released on Thursday, the government argued that the accusations do not hold up when looking at Makinde’s actions.

Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, emphasized that true intentions are shown through actions. He pointed out that a person who is against Islam would not build mosques or support Islamic programs.

Olanrewaju highlighted that Makinde built the Omituntun Mosque before he became governor and has actively engaged with the Muslim community through various initiatives. He questioned why someone accused of being anti-Muslim would invest in a mosque long before entering politics.

Since taking office in 2019, the government stated that there has been no evidence of any actions taken against Islamic practices or institutions. Instead, they noted that Makinde’s administration has recognized the Islamic New Year by declaring a public holiday.

Regarding claims about forcing Muslim students to participate in Christmas events, the government stated that no official orders supporting these allegations have been found. They also addressed the demolition of the Adogba Central Mosque, explaining that Makinde personally visited the site and promised to rebuild it, which he later fulfilled.

Olanrewaju concluded that the evidence shows a pattern of support for the Muslim community, rather than hostility. He expressed confidence that if elected President, Makinde would continue to respect the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of their religion.
