INEC Uncovers Kidnapping Plot Against NYSC Members Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it has stopped a plan by suspected criminals to kidnap and threaten members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who will work as temporary staff during the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan shared this information during a meeting in Lokoja, Kogi State.

Amupitan stated that the suspects were caught thanks to intelligence efforts and have been charged by the Department of State Services (DSS). He emphasized that anyone who threatens or harms electoral workers, including NYSC members, will face serious legal consequences.

The chairman reassured that INEC is committed to the safety of its personnel, especially those conducting elections. To enhance security, INEC is collaborating with various agencies, including the military and police, through a group called the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

Amupitan explained that this security plan involves coordinated efforts among multiple security organizations across the North-Central Zone and the Federal Capital Territory. The commission is implementing a security strategy known as the ICCES Tentacle, which aims to improve security from the national level down to local areas.

Additionally, INEC is using tools to assess election risks and identify areas that may need more security attention. Special focus will be given to polling units near vulnerable locations to ensure a safe voting environment.

Amupitan reiterated the importance of peaceful elections and effective management of logistics and results. He affirmed INEC’s dedication to making sure that all polling places are safe for citizens to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming elections.
