Cristiano Ronaldo Retires from Portugal’s National Team After 23 Years

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from the Portugal national football team after a remarkable 23-year career. The news was shared by Guinness World Records, which recognized his achievements in international football.

Ronaldo, who is 41 years old, leaves the team with impressive records: he made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals, both of which are the highest in men’s international football history. In a post on social media, Guinness World Records confirmed, “Cristiano Ronaldo officially retires from international football. He retires with the most caps in international football (234) and the most goals in international football (146).”

In a heartfelt video, Ronaldo explained his decision, stating that it was time to pass on the iconic number seven shirt to the next generation. He expressed his pride in representing Portugal for over two decades, saying, “I never felt it belonged to me alone, but for 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it.”

Ronaldo made his international debut in August 2003 and went on to lead Portugal to their first major trophy at the 2016 European Championship. He also played a key role in Portugal winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019.

His retirement comes after weeks of speculation regarding his future with the national team, following a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus. Despite earlier claims that he would continue to be available for selection, Ronaldo’s final appearance was in a Nations League match against Wales on September 24.

With his retirement, Ronaldo leaves a legacy as Portugal’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer.
