Military Debunks Viral Video of Borno Attack as Recycled Propaganda
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has categorically dismissed a viral video circulating on social media that purportedly shows a recent terrorist attack on troops in Marte, Borno State. According to the DHQ, the footage is a recycled clip from a previous incident, first posted online in December 2020, and is being used as propaganda by terrorist sympathizers to mislead the public and undermine the morale of the Armed Forces.
Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, clarified that the video is unrelated to the recent events in Marte. He stated, “The visual content, terrain, and operational context clearly indicate that the footage is from an occurrence at a different location which was first posted on 7 December 2020.”
The DHQ emphasized that the dissemination of such misleading content is a deliberate attempt by criminal elements and terrorist sympathizers to spread fear and disinformation. They urged the public to exercise caution and verify information from credible sources before sharing.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by misinformation and the importance of media literacy in the digital age. The military continues to call for public support in countering the spread of false narratives that aim to destabilize national security.
