Federal Government Intensifies Efforts Against Boko Haram Resurgence in Northeast Nigeria

The Federal Government has escalated its counter-insurgency operations in response to a recent resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria’s northeastern region. This development has raised concerns about a potential return to the heightened insecurity experienced during the group’s peak activity years.

According to reports, Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have intensified their assaults since early 2025. These include overrunning military outposts, deploying roadside bombs, and conducting raids on civilian communities. The militants have also adopted advanced tactics, such as the use of armed drones and nighttime raids, contributing to the destabilization of the region.

In a significant policy proposal, Nigeria’s Defence Chief, General Christopher Musa, has advocated for the construction of fences along the country’s borders with Cameroon, Niger, Benin, and Chad. This measure aims to curb the infiltration of armed groups and enhance national security. General Musa emphasized the importance of effective border management, citing examples from countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

The resurgence of Boko Haram has led to increased displacement, with many civilians forced to flee their homes. The United Nations estimates that the conflict has resulted in the deaths of approximately 35,000 people and the displacement of over 2 million others since 2009. Local authorities and international observers have expressed concerns about the potential for the situation to deteriorate further if decisive actions are not taken.

The Federal Government reiterates its commitment to restoring peace and stability in the affected regions. Efforts are ongoing to strengthen military capabilities, enhance regional cooperation, and address the underlying factors contributing to the insurgency.
