Abia State Intensifies Flood Preparedness Measures Under Governor Otti’s Leadership

In response to forecasts indicating potential flooding in 11 out of its 17 local government areas, Abia State, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, has embarked on comprehensive measures to mitigate the anticipated disaster.

The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have identified areas including Aba North, Aba South, Osisioma Ngwa, Isiala Ngwa North and South, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East and West, Umuahia North and South, and Umunneochi as high and moderate flood risk zones.

To address these concerns, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) conducted a sensitization program in Umuahia, aiming to educate stakeholders on flood preparedness and waste management. The initiative emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal to prevent drainage blockages, a significant contributor to urban flooding.

Governor Otti’s administration has also launched an 18-month phased project targeting the perennial flooding in Aba, particularly around the Ariaria International Market. The plan includes desilting blocked drains in both Aba and Umuahia and implementing sustainable waste management practices.

Furthermore, the state government is collaborating with local leaders and community organizations to develop accessible early warning systems. These efforts aim to empower residents with timely information, enabling proactive measures against potential flooding.

Governor Otti has urged citizens to support these initiatives by maintaining cleanliness and adhering to waste disposal regulations. He emphasized that collective action is crucial in safeguarding lives and properties during the rainy season.

As Abia State braces for the challenges posed by the impending floods, the government’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to disaster risk reduction and community resilience.
