Governor Alia Accuses Politicians of Sponsoring Violence in Benue Communities
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has alleged that certain politicians, particularly those based in Abuja, are orchestrating the ongoing violence and banditry in the state’s Sankera axis, which includes Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo Local Government Areas. He emphasized that these attacks are perpetrated by local individuals influenced by political actors.
“The instability is never created by invaders; it is not from outsiders. It is the homegrown bandits who come out there to kill their fathers and mothers and their brothers and sisters,” Governor Alia stated during a recent address. He expressed concern over the persistent insecurity in the region, attributing it to internal political dynamics.
The governor’s remarks follow a series of deadly attacks in the Sankera area. In one incident, six individuals were killed in Ukum LGA, leading to protests, and subsequently, 18 more were murdered in Katsina-Ala LGA. A viral video also surfaced, showing bandits threatening further violence in the region.
Governor Alia condemned these acts, describing them as “a flagrant affront to the peace and security of our communities.” He assured residents that his administration is committed to restoring peace and bringing the perpetrators to justice. “We request all security organs to intensify their efforts in detecting and capturing the perpetrators of this heinous atrocity,” he added.
The governor also appealed to the youth and community leaders to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies. He emphasized the importance of unity and collective action in combating the threats facing the state.
Benue State has been grappling with recurrent attacks, often attributed to clashes between herders and farmers over land and water resources. The state’s agrarian communities have suffered significant losses, prompting calls for more robust security measures and political accountability.
Governor Alia’s allegations highlight the complex interplay between local politics and security challenges in Benue, underscoring the need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of the violence.
