Aregbesola Cautions ADC Supporters: Shun Insults, Engage With Facts

Rauf Aregbesola, the interim National Secretary of the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC), has charged party supporters to elevate political discourse by shunning insults and personal attacks, urging them instead to challenge opponents with verifiable facts and focus on the substantive issues affecting Nigerians.

Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior and erstwhile Governor of Osun State, issued the advice via a statement on his social media platforms on Friday, July 4, 2025, upon his return to Lagos after the formal launch of the ADC as the unifying platform for a broad opposition coalition in Abuja.

Addressing the jubilant crowd that received him in Lagos, Aregbesola underscored the immense task ahead for the ADC, which aims to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that the gravity of this mission demands a refined approach to political engagement.

“We do not need to fight, insult, or attack anyone,” Aregbesola declared. “When others resort to abuse or name-calling, we must rise above it. Instead, ask them one simple question: Are Nigerians better off today than they were before? Challenge them with facts on food inflation, the economy, the rising cost of living, and the deepening poverty affecting millions.”

The former governor, who once served as a close ally of President Bola Tinubu before their political divergence in 2022, stressed the need for the ADC to distinguish itself as an ideologically-driven party. He contrasted this with what he described as Nigeria’s traditional political landscape, plagued by parties that often lack clear principles and prioritize power and personality over public good.

Let our debates remain focused on the issues that matter. Articulate our position clearly and confidently. Explain why our new political home, the ADC, represents a credible and necessary alternative for Nigeria’s progress and long-term sustainability,” he urged.

Aregbesola’s prominent new role within the ADC signals a significant realignment of political forces ahead of the next election cycle. His call for a fact-based, issue-oriented campaign aims to set a new standard for political engagement, inviting a focus on policy solutions rather than divisive rhetoric.
