Atiku: Tribalism is a ‘Malignant Disease’ Hindering Nigeria’s Progress

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a strong warning against the pervasive issue of tribalism in Nigeria’s political sphere, describing it as a “malignant disease” that is impeding the nation’s progress. In a recent statement, Atiku charged that the country’s political elite are the primary culprits in fostering ethnic divisions to serve their personal ambitions.

“At elections, let your conscience guide you. Never be deceived into rejecting a candidate because he is Hausa, Igbo, or Yoruba,” Atiku stated. He urged Nigerians to prioritize a leader’s competence, integrity, and track record over their ethnic or regional identity. He further advised citizens to cultivate relationships based on shared identity as Nigerians, rather than on tribal lines.

In a swift reaction, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the former Vice President of being an “alarmist” and of making “reckless” and “irresponsible” comments. The APC, through its National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, dismissed Atiku’s claims, stating that his remarks were an attempt to instigate anarchy and undermine the current administration.

Morka added that Atiku, having served as a Vice President for eight years, had the opportunity to address the nation’s problems but failed to do so. He concluded by urging Nigerians to disregard Atiku’s statement, describing it as “self-serving” and “a threat to the peace, unity, interest, and progress” of the country.
