Brake Failure from Overspeeding Truck Kills Three LASUSTECH Students, Leaves Seven Others Critically Injured

A devastating tragedy cast a pall of grief over the Ikorodu metropolis today, Saturday, November 8, 2025, after three promising students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) were killed in a horrifying multiple-vehicle collision.

The fatal crash, which occurred at the Powerline Junction, before Aleje, inward Ikorodu Roundabout, left seven other individuals with grievous injuries, including several tricycle operators.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the details of the accident. He stated that the catastrophic event involved a tipper truck heavily laden with sand (unregistered), a Toyota Corolla, an MPV bus, and four tricycles.

Brake Failure Due to Excessive Speed

Preliminary investigations conducted by traffic operatives revealed the immediate cause of the carnage: the driver of the tipper, travelling at an excessive speed, suffered a mechanical brake failure. Losing control of the runaway vehicle, the truck careened into other road users, colliding forcefully with the multiple vehicles in its path.

“In an incident of profound tragedy… three promising students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu, two males and one female, lost their lives instantaneously,” Taofiq confirmed in a statement.

Emergency responders, including officials of LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Police, immediately mobilized to the scene. They swiftly conveyed the seven critically injured victims to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment, while the three deceased casualties were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital, Ikorodu mortuary.
