DSS Drags Sowore, X, and Meta to Court Over Anti-Tinubu Post

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count criminal charge against activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, along with the social media giants X Corp and Meta Inc. The lawsuit, lodged today at the Federal High Court in Abuja, is a direct response to a controversial post made by Sowore on his social media accounts.

The charges stem from a social media post made by Sowore on August 26, 2025, where he referred to President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.” The DSS claims the post is false, malicious, and a threat to national security, capable of causing a breakdown of law and order among individuals with divergent views on the President’s personality.

This legal action follows a prior attempt by the security agency to have the content removed. Last week, the DSS sent a formal letter to X and Meta, demanding the platforms delete the post and threatening legal action if they failed to comply. Sowore, however, publicly vowed not to retract his statement, asserting his right to free speech.

The charges, filed by legal counsel on behalf of the DSS and the Federal Government, accuse Sowore of contravening provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024. The case has yet to be assigned to a judge, but Sowore has confirmed the development on his social media, stating he will be present for the trial.
