El-Rufai Remanded in ICPC Custody Until April 14; Former Governor Faces $817,000 Money Laundering Charges After Returning from Mother’s Funeral

The legal “Solution” for Nasir El-Rufai’s freedom has been pushed forward by two weeks, as a Federal High Court in Kaduna adjourned his bail ruling to April 14, 2026. On Wednesday, the court “flipped the script” on expectations of an immediate release, ordering the former governor to remain in the custody of the ICPC while the judge considers the arguments from both the defense and the prosecution.

The proceedings marked El-Rufai’s first major court appearance since the death of his mother last week. Although he was granted a brief “compassionate leave” to bury the family matriarch in Abuja, the reality of his 10-count corruption trial took center stage as he arrived at the court under heavy security, dressed in a light brown outfit and cap. The ICPC’s case against him is multifaceted, alleging that he used his position as governor to approve “massively inflated” retirement benefits for himself and facilitated the deposit of nearly $818,000 in illicit funds into his private bank accounts.

El-Rufai’s lead counsel, Iyamu Oyewole (SAN), argued passionately for his client’s release, noting that the former minister has deep ties to Nigeria and would not abscond. However, the prosecution painted a different picture, suggesting that El-Rufai’s influence in Kaduna remains so strong that his release could jeopardize the integrity of the investigation.

As the “Architect of Modern Kaduna” waits in a cell, the political atmosphere in the state remains tense. Supporters who gathered outside the court were met with a wall of security forces, highlighting the sensitivity of a trial that many believe will define the anti-corruption legacy of the current administration. For now, the “Renewed Hope” for El-Rufai’s supporters rests on the upcoming April 14 ruling, while the ICPC continues to dig into his eight-year tenure.
