Enugu DisCo Begins Second Phase of Free Prepaid Meter Rollout, Targets 13,335 Band A Customers

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) today, Tuesday, November 11, 2025, announced the official commencement of the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution across the South-East region. This phase, known as Tranche B of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) metering programme, aims to aggressively close the metering gap and eliminate the controversial practice of estimated billing.

The initiative, established and funded by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), targets a total of 13,335 unmetered customers of EEDC and its subsidiary companies in this current phase.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Group Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, confirmed that the focus of Tranche B remains on unmetered customers on service Band “A” feeders—those who receive the highest daily electricity supply.

Meters Are Free of Charge

Mr. Ezeh emphasized a critical message to all customers: “These meters and their installation are free, and customers are cautioned against making any form of payment to the meter installers or succumbing to any form of inducement or extortion.” He stressed that this aligns with the company’s commitment to improving service transparency and customer satisfaction.

The EEDC spokesperson further explained that the programme began with a Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise on November 2, 2025, and customers on the priority list are urged to verify and update their contact information at their nearest Customer Service Unit. EEDC teams will be reaching out to eligible customers using the information provided in their profile.

Ezeh confirmed the success of the first phase, Tranche A, which saw the company meter 13,614 Band “A” customers earlier this year. He assured the public that the systematic approach would continue, with attention shifting to Band “B” customers once the current priority group is fully metered.

He concluded with a stern warning against energy theft, urging customers to avoid engaging in meter bypass or other illegal activities, which undermine efforts to instill efficiency and revenue protection across the network.
