Ex-Gov Suswam Dumps Party for APC, Blasts ‘Endless Warfare’ and Lack of Leadership
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered a major earthquake in its North-Central stronghold as former Benue State Governor, Senator Gabriel Suswam, officially resigned his membership and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) this Wednesday.
In a resignation letter that read like a political autopsy, Suswam didn’t hold back. He characterized his now-former party as a failing institution trapped in “political intensive care,” plagued by deep-seated dysfunctions and a leadership structure that has completely lost its way. After decades of serving as a House of Reps member, Governor, and Senator under the umbrella, Suswam stated that the party has moved from being a symbol of cohesion to an “arena of endless internal warfare.”
“I find it increasingly difficult to reconcile my continued membership with my personal convictions and desire to contribute meaningfully to nation-building,” Suswam wrote, effectively turning his back on the party he once helped lead.
The ink on his resignation letter was barely dry before the former Governor was seen at his ward in Logo Local Government Area, registering as a card-carrying member of the APC. His move to the ruling party is seen as a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 political cycle, reuniting him with his long-time associate, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
However, the PDP is not letting him leave without a fight. In a sharp “parting gift,” the party’s state publicity secretary, Tim Nyor, claimed Suswam couldn’t “resign” because he had already been expelled months ago for failing to pay his dues and openly associating with other political coalitions.
Whether it was a resignation or an expulsion, one thing is certain: the “Sage of Benue politics” has officially changed camps, leaving the PDP to figure out its “treatment plan” while the APC gains a battle-tested heavyweight in the middle belt.
