FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Late President Buhari

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82. The declaration is a mark of respect for the former leader’s extensive service and contributions to the nation.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Monday, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The public holiday is in furtherance of the seven days of national mourning that President Tinubu had earlier declared, which commenced on Sunday, July 13, with flags flying at half-mast across the country.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister urged all Nigerians to use the day to reflect on President Buhari’s life, leadership, and the values he upheld. “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the statement read. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

The declaration of the public holiday coincides with the scheduled burial of the former president. According to confirmed arrangements, Buhari’s body is expected to arrive in Katsina State by noon on Tuesday and will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, by 2 p.m., in accordance with Islamic rites. A high-powered presidential delegation, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, had travelled to London to oversee the repatriation of his remains.

Beyond the federal declaration, the Northwest Governors Forum has also ordered a regional public holiday across seven states: Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara, in joint recognition of Buhari’s regional and national impact. Additionally, the National Assembly has suspended all plenary sessions until July 22 to allow lawmakers to participate in mourning activities. A special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session initially slated for Tuesday has also been postponed.

The Federal Government extended its deepest condolences to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
