Firefighters Battle Huge Blaze as Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate Goes Up in Flames

Panic gripped residents and workers in the Mile 2 area of Lagos this Saturday evening as a massive fire tore through sections of the Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate.

The blaze, which started as the sun was setting, sent thick, dark smoke billowing into the sky, visible from kilometers away. Because the estate is a hub for manufacturing and warehousing, the fire found plenty of “fuel” to keep it burning, sparking fears among nearby business owners that the inferno could spread to adjoining structures.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service was quick to respond, with sirens wailing as trucks rushed to the industrial zone. Margaret Adeseye, the head of the service, issued a swift statement to calm the public. “We are currently attending to the outbreak at Amuwo Odofin,” she assured. “Our men are on the ground and we are on top of the situation. There is no need for residents to exercise fear.”

Traffic around the Mile 2 and Alaba Suru axis became a bit of a nightmare as motorists slowed down to catch a glimpse of the flames. LASTMA officers were seen working alongside the firefighters, cordoning off the area and diverted cars to ensure emergency vehicles had a clear path to the “battleground.”

While the sight of the flames was terrifying for those nearby, the good news so far is that no casualties have been reported. However, with warehouses potentially filled with goods, the financial loss is likely to be heavy.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the site through the night to ensure every “hot spot” is quenched. For now, the cause of the fire remains a mystery, but a full investigation is expected once the smoke clears.
