Gombe Kicks Off 2025 Farming Season with Subsidized Fertilizer Rollout, Boosts Supply by 150%

The Gombe State Government has officially flagged off the 2025 wet season farming, commencing the sales and distribution of heavily subsidized fertilizer to farmers across the state. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya performed the ceremony on Thursday, June 26, 2025, unveiling a major intervention designed to significantly boost agricultural productivity and ensure food security.

Addressing farmers and agricultural stakeholders, Governor Yahaya announced the procurement of 10,000 metric tons (equivalent to 200,000 bags) of NPK 20:10:10 fertilizer. This substantial quantity represents a remarkable 150 percent increase over the volume distributed during the 2024 wet season, signaling the state’s reinforced commitment to agricultural development.

“For the 2025 wet farming season, we have procured 10,000 metric tons of NPK 20:10:10 fertilizer at the cost of N44,000 per bag, but it will be sold to farmers at a heavily subsidized rate of N27,000,” Governor Yahaya stated. He emphasized that this significant gesture underscores his administration’s commitment to making agriculture affordable, accessible, and productive for the over 80% of the state’s population engaged in farming.

The initiative is directly in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which identifies agriculture as a vital pillar for inclusive economic development and national food security. The Governor stressed that timely access to essential inputs like fertilizer is critical for increasing crop yields, improving soil fertility, enhancing profitability, and fostering sustainable agricultural practices.

To ensure transparent and equitable distribution, Governor Yahaya directed the State Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, in collaboration with security agencies and civil society organizations, to strictly monitor the sales and distribution process. The ministry is tasked with delivering the fertilizers directly to all 114 political wards across the 11 local government areas of the state, ensuring that the commodity reaches genuine grassroots farmers and preventing any diversion or mismanagement.

This sustained effort to support farmers builds on the Yahaya administration’s consistent prioritization of the agricultural sector over the past six years, recognizing its pivotal role in the livelihood of the people and the overall economic development of Gombe, often referred to as the heartbeat of the North-East sub-region.
