Gombe Records 72 Road Deaths, 171 Crashes in First Half of 2025 – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Gombe State Command, has reported a concerning increase in road fatalities and crashes within the state, with no fewer than 72 lives lost and 171 road traffic crashes recorded between January and June 2025.

Mr. Samson Kaura, the Gombe Sector Commander of the FRSC, disclosed these grim statistics on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe. He stated that a total of 1,156 persons were involved in the crashes during the six-month period.

According to Kaura, out of those involved, 641 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 443 escaped unhurt. The data indicates that 6.23 percent of passengers involved in these incidents died, 55.45 percent were injured, and 38.32 percent emerged unscathed.

A breakdown of the monthly fatalities shows fluctuating numbers: 18 deaths in January, 12 in February, five in March, 16 in April, five in May, and 16 in June.

The Sector Commander further revealed that 234 vehicles were involved in these crashes. Notably, 105 of these were bicycles and tricycles, accounting for 44.87 percent of the total vehicles implicated, highlighting a significant concern with these modes of transport in the state.

Kaura expressed strong disapproval of the attitude of some drivers who consistently flout traffic rules and fail to adhere to recommended speed limits. He emphasized the need for motorists to conduct thorough checks of their vehicles before embarking on journeys.

“Now we are in the rainy season, drivers must be careful not to overspeed because the roads are slippery and wet,” Kaura warned. He also advised drivers to ensure clear visibility by fixing any obstructions and, if possible, to minimize night driving due to increased risks.

The FRSC continues its efforts in public education and enforcement to curb the rising trend of road accidents in Gombe State and ensure the safety of all road users.
