Ile-Ife to Host Maiden 5km Cultural Road Race During Olojo Festival

The ancient city of Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba race, is set to host the inaugural edition of the Ife Road Race, a 5-kilometer cultural road race scheduled to take place on September 25, 2025. The event is a unique blend of athleticism and cultural heritage, timed to coincide with the city’s iconic Olojo Festival.

Conceived by Sooko Adeleke Odewade, a passionate advocate for youth empowerment, the race has received the official endorsement of His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. It is being organized in partnership with the Alade’fa Athletic Family Initiative.

According to the organizers, the race’s primary objective is not only to promote healthy living but also to discover and nurture emerging athletic talent while celebrating and preserving Yoruba culture. The race route has been meticulously planned to take runners through some of Ile-Ife’s most significant cultural landmarks, offering participants a unique and immersive experience into the city’s rich history.

Our society lacks opportunities for discovering and grooming talent,” Sooko Odewade said. “This race is a platform to identify raw potential, but it won’t stop there. We’re building a system of coaching, mentorship, and support long after the race ends.”

The event aims to serve as a catalyst for youth empowerment, offering opportunities for promising young athletes to connect with seasoned professionals and institutions. Organizers are already in discussions with universities and sports councils to provide post-race coaching and potential scholarship opportunities.

The race is open to a wide range of participants, including youth, the general public, and professional athletes, with special cash prizes set aside for category winners. All participants will receive certificates of participation.

Beyond the athletic competition, the Ife Road Race is expected to be a significant boost to the local economy. By drawing visitors, vendors, and sponsors, the event is set to enhance the cultural and commercial vibrancy of the Olojo Festival period.

With the blessing of the Ooni and a strong emphasis on tradition, purpose, and community development, the Ife Road Race is poised to become a flagship event on Nigeria’s sports and cultural calendar.
