INEC Moves Sensitive Materials to Ogun, Deploys 2,445 Officers for By-election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun State has announced its readiness for the upcoming by-election, confirming the deployment of 2,445 officers and sensitive materials to the polling units. The by-election for the Ijebu-East State Constituency is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
According to a statement from the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State, Niyi Ijalaye, the sensitive materials, including ballot papers and result sheets, were moved from the state branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday morning. They were transported under heavy security to the INEC office in the Ijebu-East Local Government Area for onward distribution to the polling units.
Ijalaye stated that the 2,445 personnel deployed for the election are a mix of INEC’s permanent staff and ad-hoc officers, who have been trained to ensure a smooth and transparent process. The deployment is part of a comprehensive plan to guarantee that the election is conducted in a credible manner.
The by-election is being held to fill the legislative seat left vacant by the passing of the former representative. The contest has drawn candidates from several political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who are vying for the seat.
In a related development, the Ogun State Police Command has deployed over 1,500 personnel to secure the by-election. The Command has also announced a restriction of movement in the constituency for the duration of the election, advising residents to stay indoors unless they are casting their votes. The security measures are aimed at preventing any form of violence or voter intimidation, ensuring a peaceful and orderly process.
