Kwara Court Remands Two Tricyclists for Brutalizing Human Rights Lawyer and Wife Over Traffic Dispute in Ilorin

What began as a simple request to clear a blocked road has landed two tricyclists in a correctional facility following a violent altercation in the heart of Ilorin. On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, an Ilorin Magistrate Court “flipped the script” on the aggressive behavior of Mohamud Saad and Sunday Emmanuel, ordering them to remain behind bars while their case for assaulting a legal professional and his spouse is heard.

The “Solution” to the traffic congestion at Adifa Junction on Sunday afternoon was supposed to be a brief conversation. However, according to the First Information Report, when Taofiq Olateju asked the riders to ease the flow of traffic so he could pass with his family, the situation turned violent. The suspects allegedly acted in concert, descending on the lawyer and his wife, Monsurat, right in front of their family home. The assault was so severe that Monsurat Olateju had to be hospitalized for injuries sustained to her arm, a detail that weighed heavily during the court proceedings.

Prosecuting the case, the police detailed how the suspects violated the Penal Code. Despite the gravity of the charges, the lawyer noted with concern that the defendants remained defiant, allegedly issuing threats even as they were being led away by officials. “They were still threatening my family and me even while being taken to prison,” Olateju recounted, highlighting the brazen nature of the attack.

The Magistrate, in siding with the prosecution’s request for remand, emphasized that the court must protect citizens from such lawless acts of violence. As the legal community in Kwara rallies behind their colleague, the case serves as a stern warning to commercial transporters about the consequences of “road rage” and physical assault. The matter has been adjourned for further hearing as the court awaits more details on the medical condition of the victims.
