Lagos LG Polls: APC Secures Chairmanship Victories in Ikorodu, Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced its sweep of the chairmanship seats in the just-concluded Local Government elections in Lagos State, with early results confirming victories in both Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA) and Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has begun the official announcement of results from Saturday’s keenly contested polls across the state’s 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs, with the ruling party showing early dominance.

In Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, the APC chairmanship candidate, Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun (HOA), was declared the winner in a landslide victory. Aroyewun, who cast his vote at polling unit 009 in Igbogbo, secured an impressive 15,051 votes. The Returning Officer for the election, Arimoro Priscilla Oluwakanyinsola, formally declared Aroyewun as the winner at the Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA secretariat at 10:32 PM on Saturday night. His closest challenger, Liadi Kazeem Olawale of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), managed to poll 341 votes.

Similarly, in Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA), the APC’s chairmanship candidate also emerged victorious. While specific vote tallies for the Ikorodu LGA chairmanship were still being collated or had yet to be fully released at the time of this report, the win solidifies APC’s hold on the Ikorodu division. Collation of results was ongoing at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat late into Saturday night.

The early declaration of results from these key areas within the Ikorodu axis sets the tone for what appears to be a dominant performance by the APC in the grassroots elections. LASIEC is expected to continue announcing results from other councils across the state as collation is completed.

Despite the APC’s early successes, the PDP chairmanship candidate in Igbogbo/Baiyeku, Liadi Olawale, raised allegations of voter inducement by the ruling party. However, he also acknowledged that the election exercise itself was largely devoid of major incidents, stating, “Although, there was no issues during the exercise.”

The Lagos LG elections, held on Saturday, July 12, saw voters choose their local government chairmen and councilors, marking a crucial step in local governance for the next four years. With tight security and varying voter turnout reported across the state, the focus now shifts to LASIEC’s headquarters as more results are expected to trickle in throughout the day.
