Lagos Partially Closes Five Cowries Creek Jetties, Prepares to Host Africa’s First E1 Powerboat Championship

The Lagos State Government has announced a series of temporary restrictions on water transportation along the Five Cowries Creek to ensure the safety and seamless execution of the upcoming E1 Championship. The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed that all private and commercial jetties and terminals in the affected corridor would experience a partial closure from Thursday, October 2, through Sunday, October 5, 2025.

The E1 Championship, which is the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series, will make its historic African debut in Lagos. The temporary closures are a critical safety and security measure required for hosting an international sporting event of this magnitude.

According to the schedule released by LASWA, ferry operations between Falomo Bridge, Oriental Hotel, and Mekwen Bridge will be impacted during the four-day period. Specifically, a total closure of the Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel stretch will be enforced on Saturday, October 4, and Sunday, October 5, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily. Earlier days will see partial restrictions in different sections of the creek.

LASWA appealed to passengers and ferry operators to plan their travel using alternative routes during the period, with normal water transportation operations expected to resume on Monday, October 6.

The hosting of the E1 Championship places Lagos alongside global destinations like Monaco and Venice, underscoring the state’s commitment to sustainable energy, innovation in the marine transport sector, and its push to be a world-class hub for international sports tourism.
