The media organization is asking the Federal High Court to direct the anti-graft agency to investigate the Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) over alleged financial misconduct.
Abuja, Nigeria – August 5, 2025
A media advocacy group, NewsGroup, has filed a legal action at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking an order to compel the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) over allegations of financial impropriety.
In the suit, the organization alleges that the NNPCL CFO is linked to questionable financial transactions, including possible misappropriation of public funds and irregularities in contract approvals. The petition argues that the EFCC has failed to act on credible information submitted several months ago regarding the alleged misconduct.
The applicant is asking the court to declare the EFCC’s inaction as a breach of its statutory duty to investigate credible allegations of economic crimes, especially where public interest is involved.
According to court documents, NewsGroup insists that its demand is based on the constitutional right of citizens to hold public officials accountable and to seek redress when public resources are allegedly mismanaged.
“The EFCC’s silence on this matter undermines public confidence in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts,” said a spokesperson for NewsGroup. “We believe the courts must compel the agency to act in line with its legal obligations.”
The case is expected to come up for hearing later this month, with legal observers closely watching whether the court will issue a mandamus order directing the EFCC to begin a formal investigation.
As of press time, neither the EFCC nor the NNPCL CFO has publicly commented on the development.
