Nigerian Army Arrests Notorious IPOB Commander in Imo State
In a major breakthrough against armed groups in the South-East, the Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of a notorious commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, popularly known as “Gentle de Yahoo.” He was captured at his hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, during a joint intelligence-driven operation.
According to a military source, the operation was executed by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, working in collaboration with other security agencies. Okorienta is a feared kingpin who has been accused of terrorizing communities across Okigwe and neighboring areas for years, allegedly orchestrating violent attacks, kidnappings, and extortion.
The raid on his hideout yielded a significant recovery of weapons and other items, including an English-made pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and military and police uniforms. The troops also uncovered a workshop used for dismantling stolen vehicles for resale and destroyed 10 motorcycles found at the scene.
Military sources have described the arrest as a “major relief for residents” who have endured months of insecurity. “This arrest is a clear message that no criminal, no matter how notorious, can hide forever. The people of Imo can now breathe easier,” a source stated. The operation is being hailed as a significant step toward restoring peace in the region.
