Oba Ladoja Confirms Three High Chiefs Will Boycott Friday’s Coronation; Senator Sharafadeen Alli and Others Reject ‘Political’ Elevation

The ancient city of Ibadan is facing a traditional “standoff” as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, confirmed on Thursday, April 2, 2026, that three prominent High Chiefs will be absent from their own coronation ceremony. The event, organized by the Oyo State Government and slated for Friday at the historic Mapo Hall, was intended to elevate the chiefs to the rank of beaded-crown Obas, but the move has instead “flipped the script” on local stability.

The “Solution” offered by the state government fast-tracking the promotions of Senator Sharafadeen Alli, Bolaji Adewoyin, and Kola Babalola has been met with stiff resistance. According to palace insiders, the High Chiefs view the timing of the ceremony as a “political trap.” Senator Alli, who is a major contender for the 2027 governorship, reportedly believes the elevation is an attempt by the current administration to “lock him into” a traditional role that might limit his political mobility.

Oba Ladoja’s confirmation of their absence underscores a deepening rift between the Olubadan-in-Council and the state government’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters. While the government maintains that the promotions are in line with the amended 2024 Chieftaincy Law, the Olubadan had expressed that the palace was still in the middle of a comprehensive review of all chiefs due for elevation.

As the 30-day countdown to other major political deadlines continues, this traditional boycott is being viewed as a significant “power play” in the race for 2027. For now, Mapo Hall remains prepared for a ceremony that may see the crowns remain in their boxes, as the “Renewed Hope” for a smooth transition in the Ibadan traditional hierarchy faces its toughest test yet.
