Politicians Fronting Coalitions are “Destiny Rustlers,” Declares Sowore

Human rights activist and former Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has launched a scathing attack on politicians pushing for various coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections, labeling them as “destiny rustlers” who are clandestinely working against genuine opposition. Sowore, the founder of the African Action Congress (AAC), expressed strong skepticism about the motives behind these alliances, describing them as deceptive strategies.

Sowore’s criticism comes amid renewed discussions among opposition figures about forming a formidable front to challenge the ruling party in the next electoral cycle. He specifically referenced comments from individuals like Kenneth Okonkwo, and has previously cast doubt on coalitions involving figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai.

According to Sowore, many of the personalities advocating for these coalitions are not genuinely interested in fostering true change or dislodging the current government. “They have resumed their gimmicks, meanwhile they are the ones the APC is utilizing to eradicate genuine opposition,” Sowore stated, pointing to a pattern of political opportunism. He highlighted instances where politicians, like Okonkwo, have moved between parties – from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labour Party – and are now seemingly realigning with the ruling party’s interests while feigning opposition.

“They are forming a spurious coalition, feigning interest in ousting a man they are all clandestinely supporting,” Sowore added, asserting that such alliances ultimately undermine the aspirations of the Nigerian people. He has consistently maintained that his own alliance is solely with the oppressed masses, stating he cannot form alliances with those he perceives as having “destroyed this country.”

Sowore’s long-standing critique of Nigeria’s political elite revolves around what he terms their continuous betrayal of the masses and their perpetuation of cycles of bad governance. His “destiny rustlers” accusation reflects his conviction that these political maneuvers are designed to hijack the nation’s future for personal or group gain, rather than serving the collective good.

The activist’s remarks underscore the deep mistrust that exists among some segments of the political class and civil society, particularly as the country inches closer to another election cycle and discussions around alliances intensify.
