Power Sector Progress: Lagos APC Celebrates ‘Improved’ Electricity Generation and Distribution

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is commending what it describes as a significant positive turnaround in Nigeria’s electricity sector. The celebration comes amidst new reports and government announcements highlighting key investments and record-breaking power generation figures.

According to government sources, a major thrust of the power sector’s renewed effort is the Lagos-Ogun Power Transmission System Improvement project. This project, funded by a $238 million loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is designed to enhance the grid’s wheeling capacity and provide more stable power supply to the crucial industrial corridors in Lagos and Ogun states. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) also approved $34 million and ₦13 billion for the procurement of new high-capacity transformers to replace dilapidated ones across the country.

These investments are beginning to show tangible results on a national scale. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that Nigeria has hit a new all-time peak power generation of 5,801.84MW in March 2025. This figure is a notable improvement and indicates a positive trend in the country’s energy output. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, stated that these milestones are a result of the government’s strategic policy reforms and partnerships aimed at delivering sustainable and functional power.

Despite these national achievements, Lagos State continues to pioneer its own solutions to its persistent power deficit. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law, which empowers the state to generate, transmit, and distribute its own electricity. This landmark legislation, which aims to reduce the state’s dependence on the national grid, is part of an ambitious plan to achieve a 24-hour economy with a target of 6 gigawatts in power generation over the next three years.

The Lagos APC’s celebration reflects a sense of optimism that the coordinated efforts between the federal and state governments, along with private sector partnerships, are beginning to yield results. While challenges such as grid instability and vandalism remain, the party’s message is that Nigeria is on the right path to addressing what has long been one of its most significant developmental obstacles.
