President Tinubu Hails Wole Soyinka at 91, Calls Nobel Laureate ‘Uncommon Patriot, Global Inspiration

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended glowing tributes to Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, describing him as an “uncommon patriot and enduring inspiration to Nigeria and the world,” as the literary titan marks his 91st birthday today, Sunday, July 13, 2025.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu celebrated Professor Soyinka as a distinguished writer, cultural ambassador, and public intellectual whose towering legacy continues to inspire generations globally.

“Professor Soyinka is an uncommon patriot who has continued to demonstrate his undying love for our country,” President Tinubu was quoted as saying. “Even at the grand old age of 91, he remains a beacon of inspiration to citizens and writers across the world. We are grateful for his long years of service to Nigeria and humanity.”

The President acknowledged Soyinka’s extraordinary creative and artistic talent, evident in his expansive body of work that encompasses plays, poems, memoirs, and essays. He highlighted the Nobel laureate’s seminal impact on education, his pivotal role in pro-democracy and human rights movements, cultural diplomacy, and nation-building over several decades. Tinubu also noted Soyinka’s profound influence on younger generations of writers worldwide, many of whom have attained significant national and international prominence.

Wole Soyinka, who in 1986 became the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, is revered globally for his intellectual prowess and unwavering commitment to justice, freedom, and cultural identity. His life has been marked by fearless advocacy, including imprisonment during the Nigerian Civil War and periods of exile, all for his convictions.

Reflecting on their relationship, President Tinubu stated, “I value my association with Professor Soyinka and several collaborations to advance the progress and development of Nigeria.” He extended warm wishes to the nonagenarian, praying for his continued good health and sound mind as he embarks on “the journey into the last decade of his centennial.”

Beyond the presidential felicitation, Professor Soyinka’s 91st birthday is being celebrated with various events. Lagos is hosting a three-day musical tribute titled “The Noble Warrior (Eni Ogun),” running from July 11 to 13, at the historic Glover Memorial Hall. Additionally, the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE) is commemorating its 16th anniversary with events scheduled in Abeokuta, Nigeria, and London, United Kingdom, further solidifying the global recognition of his profound impact.
