Prominent Politicians Exit PDP Amid Internal Party Turmoil
Two notable figures in Nigerian politics have announced their resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing internal crises and a departure from democratic principles as their reasons for leaving.
Adekunle Akinlade, the former deputy governorship candidate of the PDP in Ogun State during the 2023 elections, officially declared his departure from the party. In a statement released on May 26, Akinlade attributed his decision to persistent and unresolved internal conflicts within the Ogun State chapter of the PDP. He expressed concerns over deliberate obstructions and institutional disregard from both the zonal and national leadership, which he believes have undermined efforts to build a more inclusive and forward-looking party.
Similarly, Senator Istifanus Gyang, a former senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District, has also resigned from the PDP. In his resignation letter dated May 26, Gyang criticized the party for straying from its foundational democratic tenets and failing to prioritize the strategic interests of Plateau State. He emphasized the need for equity, fairness, and inclusivity in governance, values he feels the PDP no longer upholds.
These resignations reflect ongoing challenges within the PDP, as internal disputes and leadership issues continue to prompt key members to reconsider their affiliations.
