Senate Approves Bill to Establish Federal Medical Centre in Southern Kaduna
The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill seeking the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Southern Kaduna, marking a significant step toward improving access to quality healthcare services in the region.
The bill, which received unanimous support during plenary, is aimed at addressing the long-standing medical infrastructure deficit in Southern Kaduna. Lawmakers backing the bill emphasized that the proposed FMC will play a critical role in providing specialized medical care, creating employment opportunities, and fostering healthcare research in the area.
Leading the debate, Senator Sunday Katung, who represents Kaduna South Senatorial District, stressed the urgent need for federal intervention in the region’s healthcare system. He noted that many residents travel long distances to access adequate medical services due to the absence of a tertiary health facility in the area.
“The establishment of this medical centre will not only save lives but also stimulate socio-economic growth in Southern Kaduna,” Katung stated.
The bill will now be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence before it proceeds to the President for assent. Once signed into law, the FMC will be included in the national budget and overseen by the Federal Ministry of Health.
