The Creative Economy: Nigeria’s Creative Industry Contributes ₦1.3 Trillion to GDP, Says Kaduna Deputy Governor

The Kaduna State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to leveraging the creative industry as a key driver of youth empowerment and economic diversification. At the opening ceremony of the 8th Kaduna International Film Festival (KADIFF), the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, delivered a keynote address highlighting the sector’s significant contributions to the national economy. Dr. Balarabe was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Gloria Ibrahim.

In her remarks, Dr. Balarabe described the creative industry as a central pillar of the state’s development agenda. “The creative industry is central to our development agenda. It provides jobs for young people, stimulates tourism, and opens doors for entrepreneurship,” she said. The deputy governor underscored the immense economic value of Nigeria’s film and music industries, stating that they collectively contribute over ₦1.3 trillion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employ more than 4.2 million Nigerians.

The deputy governor also commended the festival’s theme, “Film for Social Change,” as both timely and profound. She noted that cinema transcends mere entertainment, acting as a powerful tool to shape societal values and inspire positive action. This sentiment was echoed by the festival’s Executive Director, Israel Kashim Audu, who stated that this year’s event was designed to showcase cinema’s transformative power through a variety of programs, including film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, and a new skill acquisition program.

Dr. Balarabe’s message concluded with a strong appeal to corporate sponsors, development partners, and philanthropists to increase their investment in the creative sector. She emphasized that Kaduna’s talented and energetic youth require the right platforms and support to realize their full potential. The 8th Kaduna International Film Festival, which runs from August 26 to 30, is featuring films from over 15 countries and serves as a vital platform for showcasing the talent that she believes can drive the state’s and the nation’s economic future.
