Tinubu, First Lady, Sanwo-Olu Mourn Afriland Towers Fire Victims
President Bola Tinubu, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have all expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fire that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. The inferno, which claimed at least 10 lives, has sent shockwaves across the country, with officials extending condolences to the bereaved families and affected businesses.
In a statement issued from the State House, President Tinubu commiserated with the families of the victims and the management and staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), United Bank for Africa (UBA), and United Capital Plc, which were all impacted by the tragedy. He praised the quick and coordinated response of emergency services and urged greater caution and training to prevent similar emergencies in the future. “The President prays that God Almighty will receive the souls of the departed and grant quick recovery to the injured,” the statement read.
Similarly, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu offered her condolences to Governor Sanwo-Olu and the people of Lagos State. “May God Almighty comfort the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the departed and the injured during this time of deep grief and pain,” she said.
In his own statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the incident as “unfortunate and shocking.” He specifically commiserated with the FIRS, which confirmed the loss of four staff members, and United Capital, which reported the deaths of six of its employees. The governor pledged that his administration would strengthen regulations and emergency preparedness to ensure public safety. He urged property owners and business operators to strictly adhere to fire safety standards to prevent future tragedies.
