Tinubu Promotes ‘Placeholder’ Legend Ibrahim Masari to Special Adviser as Presidency Tightens 2027 Political Coordination
President Bola Tinubu has moved to fortify his political “inner sanctum” by elevating one of his most trusted North-West allies. On Thursday, March 5, 2026, the Presidency announced the promotion of Alhaji Ibrahim Kabiru Masari from Senior Special Assistant to the more influential rank of Special Adviser on Political Affairs.
The move, announced by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, signals a significant “State of Harmony” within the administration’s political machinery. Masari, who has spent the last three years as an SSA, will now take on a broader strategic mandate. He is expected to work in lockstep with Alhaji Yau Darazo to manage the increasingly complex relationships between the Presidency, the APC leadership, and the various political blocs forming ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Masari is no stranger to high-stakes political maneuvers. He famously served as the “placeholder” vice-presidential candidate for the APC in 2022, a strategic role that allowed the party to meet INEC deadlines while finalizing its eventual ticket. His deep roots in Katsina and his former tenure as the APC’s National Welfare Secretary make him a critical bridge for the administration in the North-West.
By moving Masari up the hierarchy, President Tinubu is signaling a shift toward more aggressive political coordination. While the SSA role focuses on implementation, the rank of Special Adviser grants Masari closer direct access to the President and a seat at the table where the “2027 Calculus” is being drafted. As the administration continues to swallow defectors from the opposition and stabilize its grip on the North, Masari’s new office is expected to become a primary hub for the President’s national political outreach.
