Vandals Cripple Delta NYSC Camp Ahead of Orientation, Electrical Installations Destroyed

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, has been targeted by suspected vandals, resulting in the destruction of all electrical installations just days before the commencement of the 2025 Batch B Stream 1 orientation exercise. The attack has caused a significant setback, disrupting preparations and temporarily affecting camp operations.

Confirming the unfortunate incident on Friday, August 1, 2025, during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly deployed corps members, the Delta State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. John Kwaghe, expressed deep regret over the vandalism. “I regret to inform Your Excellency of a recent unfortunate incident — the vandalisation of all electrical installations within the camp just days before the commencement of the current orientation course,” Kwaghe stated.

The coordinator highlighted that the persistent challenge of a collapsed perimeter fence around the camp has left the facility exposed to security threats and criminal activities, making it vulnerable to such attacks. He appealed for urgent intervention from stakeholders to rebuild the fence, emphasizing the critical need to safeguard government facilities, especially a vital institution like the NYSC orientation camp.

Mr. Kwaghe disclosed that the issue has been formally escalated to key government figures and traditional leaders, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Secretary to the State Government, the Chairman of the NYSC State Governing Board, the Aniocha North Local Government Chairman, and the traditional ruler of Issele-Uku, Obi Agbogidi Nduka.

In response, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented at the event by the State Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. ThankGod Trakiriowei, acknowledged the operational difficulties faced by the NYSC in Delta State. He assured the Commission of the state government’s readiness to promptly address the challenges, reaffirming its commitment to providing a safe and conducive environment for corps members to thrive and contribute meaningfully during their service year.

Despite the significant disruption caused by the vandalism, Mr. Kwaghe reported that a total of 1,374 prospective corps members, comprising 613 males and 761 females, had been successfully registered and fully kitted for the orientation exercise and the Oath of Allegiance. The NYSC management continues to work towards mitigating the impact of the vandalism and ensuring the smooth conduct of the orientation course.
