Zamfara Islamic Group Condemns Governor Lawal’s Anniversary Celebration Over Alleged Immoral Displays
The Zamfara Ulama Defence Forum (ZUDF), a prominent Islamic organization, has strongly criticized the recent second-term anniversary celebration of Governor Dauda Lawal, citing the event’s alleged deviation from the state’s Islamic values.
In a statement released on Friday, ZUDF expressed deep concern over reports of musical performances featuring scantily clad female dancers and the open consumption of alcoholic beverages during the celebration held in Gusau, the state capital. The group described these activities as unacceptable under Islamic law and cultural norms in Zamfara, a state known for its commitment to Sharia law since its implementation in 2000.
Sheikh Bashir Mu’azu Marafa, president of ZUDF, stated, “It is both unfortunate and shameful that on the second-term anniversary of a sitting governor in a core Islamic state like Zamfara, alcohol was served, and women of questionable character were paraded on public stages in revealing clothes.” He further emphasized that such scenes are a clear departure from the values held dear by the people of Zamfara.
The group warned that the incident could signal a dangerous shift undermining the efforts of Islamic clerics, scholars, and moral reformers who have worked tirelessly to preserve the values of modesty, morality, and spiritual uprightness in the state. They urged the state house of assembly, traditional institutions, and community-based organizations to demand accountability from the governor and his team regarding the coordination and content of the celebration.
As of the time of this report, Governor Lawal has not publicly responded to the criticisms.
Zamfara State has been recognized for its strict adherence to Islamic principles, with the implementation of Sharia law in 2000 under former Governor Ahmad Sani Yerima. The recent events have sparked a broader conversation about the balance between cultural traditions and modern governance in the state.
